Welcome from the Founders
Dear Visitor,
Welcome to FairPlay.
During my first few months in Cusco, my fiancée and I met a single mother who profoundly affected our lives and set in motion the creation of this establishment. This woman had become pregnant while studying in university, and unlike many societies where single mothers are accepted, in Peru this is not the case: this young woman was forced to leave university, was left by her boyfriend and was shunned by her own parents due to the shame and embarrassment they believed she brought to the family. She had no home and turned to cleaning houses, washing clothes and a variety of other poorly paid jobs in order to survive and care for her newborn child.
Meeting this woman would lead to our discovery of some shocking facts—her story was not unique but one that is shared by many Cusquenian women. We discovered that at least 25% of Peruvians live in extreme poverty; of this group, 72% are the families of single mothers. Such realities were too shocking to ignore. Fanny and I decided to do something about this, and in 2006 FairPlay was born.
FairPlay is a nonprofit organization that seeks to enable these women to survive and prosper. We select and train single mothers to teach Spanish to international travelers and volunteers, supporting them in an independent job with reasonable hours and a fair wage. This way, the women have enough time and money to care for their children. Their children, in turn, have the advantages of education, food, and the chance to do what children do best—explore the world and the opportunities around them.
In addition, we’ve initiated a homestay program for our students with local families. Whether you’re taking Spanish lessons or participating in a homestay, you’re not just learning Spanish or experiencing the Peruvian culture—you’re contributing to the wellbeing and future of 22 families with over 50 children.
Our students describe us as a family, and that is exactly what we are. We spend all of our energy, time and money creating futures for single Peruvian mothers as well as an unforgettable experience for our students. With a highly professional team, FairPlay has come a long way, and today we stand as one of Cusco’s most successful Spanish schools.
We hope to see you at FairPlay soon.
Yours Sincerely,
Welcome to FairPlay.
